Filling in the cracks with ???

Hello there. Please forgive me if this question has been asked and answered before, but I have not been successful in finding it anywhere....

I would LOVE to make a version of the Farmhouse Table, but am concerned about food particles getting caught in the cracks where the boards meet. I love the look of having them butt up next to one another, but with 7 (+!) children spills and messes are a daily activity here in our house. What do you recommend to fill in those cracks to have the look of the planks with a smooth top? My husband has suggested a veneered top plywood, but I would rather have the planks if possible (plus it's cheaper!). Thank you for any information you can give me!

I'm doing a cheapo project with an OSB table top. OSB is a bunch of strands of wood going every which way. For a smooth top I'm using Envirotex Lite. It's self leveling and basically is dries to be a sheet of plastic.

The easiest way to get rid of the gaps is to plane the edges to make them smooth. With the plane set for a moderate cut you can take the rounded edge off quickly, and the edges will meet up more tightly.

If you can swing it, buy a jack plane, which may be marked as a #5 from manufacturers who use a numbering system, but in any event should be around 14 inches long. I've had the best luck buying them second hand off ebay.
