Skill Levels?

What dictates how difficult a plan is? All of the pieces I want to build for my house seem to be considered hard or advanced. I don't want/need the beginner ones, so don't want to spend the time or money building those plans. But, I also don't want to start on something and get totally overwhelmed. In general, are there specific things that make something more difficult?
