Hello,
I built the wonderful camp loft bed for my son over the summer. We all, including neighbor kids, love it. Underneath has become a little library with cushy chairs and books.
I want to build the $10 ledges for books but the problem is that we 1) live in a rental and toggle screws seem to be very destructive to walls insofar as you need a very large hole to get them in and 2) the building is old (100+ years) and I think the wood, based on examining an outlet, is at least 2 1/2" beyond the plaster.
So I don't want to mount the shelves on the wall. I realized it might be possible to mount them between the rear posts of the camp bed, thereby offering addition support to the bed as well as serving as a place for the books.
That said, I want to ask if any more experienced builders might have any thoughts on challenges I might encounter that hadn't occurred.
I am planning to build them the same as in the plans, although possibly taller to account for the lack of wall behind to support the books. Then I'd mount them with Kreg screws in the back, two per side.
I would like to make two, which would be two 75" shelves along the back of the underside of the bed.
Thank you for any suggestions or comments. I love this site! There is not enough room in my house to hold all the things I want to build!
