buffet

You've done a few buffets, but this one is low, at only 30" high. I need one 28" high, but I'm sure I could zip 2" off the height in the legs. This one is nice because of all the slotted storage on the bottom. The detail on the sides is also very nice.

If I were to post a sketchup file of the buffet could you build the piece without step by step directions?

I probably could, but it would take me a lot longer. I wouldn't need detailed steps, but a shopping list and cut list would be great. I like step-by-steps, though, because that's the main reason I rarely touch all my woodworking books: no directions.

You could also modify one of these:

add 10" to the leg pieces here, then add the wine shelves under it, it isn't as long though at only 48".

this is almost the same size as the PB one you posted, but the drawers/shelves are different. but you could modify by adding extra dividers to the shelves and not making the drawers....

or take this one and use straight boards for the legs to make any height you want, then put dividers on the shelf...

Tash-  Those are some good ideas for modifying existing plans to suit a need.

Ok bmpoquette  Here is your shopping list/cutlist and sketchup FILE

I've made the different components into groups so it's easy to break things down.

Shopping List:

  • Sheet of 1/4” Ply    For back of buffet – not seen, any grade will do
  • Sheet of 1/2” Ply   For wine rack – good both sides or use MDF
  • Sheet of 3/4” Ply   End Panels and wine rack – one good side
  • 9 2x4 8'
  • 1 2x2 8'
  • 2 4x4 8' or 1 12' 4x4
  • 1 1x4 12'      Cut in half for ride home if necessary or 2 1x4 8'
  • 1 1x10 6'      For Drawer fronts  – choose a nice board
  • 2 1x8 8' or 1 1x8 12'
  • 2 pair 14” drawer glides

Knobs or Handles for two 26” wide drawers

Cut List:

Top:

  • 5 – 65” 2x4
  • 1 – 65” 2x2

Legs:

  • 4 – 33” 4x4

Case:

  • 4 – 56” 2x4
    Front and back rails

  • 1 – 13.5” 2x4
    Center drawer support

  • 6 – 10.5” 2x4
    Side rails

  • 2 – 8.75” 2x4
    Center dividers between drawers

  • 2 – 56” 1x4
    Top Rails

  • 2 – 7 3/8” x 10.5” 3/4” Ply   End panels
  • 2 – 12” x 10.5” 3/4” Ply       End panels

Back:

  • 1 – 27” x 56”
    1/4” Ply

Wine rack:

  • 2 – 56” x 16” 3/4” Ply Rack Top & Bottom
  • 2 – 10.5” x 16” 3/4” Ply Rack Sides
  • 1 – 10.5” x 54.5” 1/2” Ply Rack Back
  • 1 – 15.5” x 54.5” 1/2” Ply Center Divider
  • 18 – 15.5” x 5” 1/2” Ply Dividers

Drawers:

  • 2 – 26.25” 1x8
    Drawer Fronts

  • 4 – 14.25” 1x8
    Drawer Sides

  • 2 – 24” 1x8
    Drawer Backs

  • 2 – 25.5” x 14.25” 1/2” Ply    Drawer Bottoms

Here's the plan of attack:

  1. Assemble the top using glue and pocket holes
  2. Build the end sections using long (2 1/2") pocket hole screws
  3. Paint/Finish all of the wine rack pieces before you assemble them.
  4. Build the wine rack portion.  Finish nail all of the dividers in place.
  5. Attach the ends together with the bottom pair of 2x4's then insert the wine rack
  6. Continue adding the other 2x4's including the divider between the drawers
  7. Attach the 1x4's
  8. Build the drawers
  9. Install the drawers
  10. Attach the top
  11. Finish nail on the back

More tips:

  • You'll need a pocket hole jig and some 2 1/2" pocket hole screws for most of the frame joints.
  • You really should consider borrowing or buying a table saw.  There are a lot of rip cuts to this one
  • You may want to make up a couple of 5"x5" spacers out of scrap 1x8 for keeping the wine rack cubbies even
  • Put the 2x2 wherever you think it looks best in the top
  • The top is attached with screws up through the 1x4's
  • Lightly round over the edges and corners of the drawer fronts to match the look of the original

If you have any questions or concerns, just ask.
