Pottery Barn Natural Wax Pine Finish

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to achieve this finish?

I was not able to paste this picture into to Forum, but below is the path to get there.

I would start with a white finish, possibly water based acrylic tinted with a very small amount of titanium white (use acrylic artists colors). Then wipe it with a dark stain. Let it sit briefly, then wipe it off thoroughly. Seal the whole thing with untinted water based polyurethane, and finally give the surface a light coat of paste wax.

The paste wax coat is optional, I just like the way the surface feels after I do that.

I want to do this finish on a media console for the living room, but I want to get in some practice first on a shoe rack or something. I will post a picture when it is done and let you know how it turns out. What does the paste wax feel like? I just finished a sofa table and though I like the way it looks, I would like it to feel more smooth, like a veneer or something.

Hi there,
Very interested in your results with the finish. I found the benchwright table in the blonde pine at a furniture outlet. It has no finish on it, not even the wax. I really want the finish look, only with polyurethane instead of the wax? Please let me know if you accomplished the look.

Paste wax which has properly cured and been buffed will feel very slick. The smoothness of the surface will depend on how carefully you have smoothed the wood. Sanding should get it pretty smooth.

Planing and scraping will get it very smooth, but those are advanced topics. The upside is that a good smooth plane is now quite inexpensive.
