Rejuvenation-style medicine cabinets

Submitted by Abuela on Tue, 02/15/2011 - 21:51

I'd love to find plans/directions that I could follow for making one of the vintage-look medicine cabinets sold by Rejuvenation (these - I like the Holbrook in particular but would take any of them).

Any ideas? Anyone willing to figure it out and create them for me? I have a lot of the basic tools - compoud miter saw, router, circular & jig saw (no table saw), sanders, and so on and I do great with repairs or rough construction but am too darn scared to try building something like this. So "here's how you do it, for dummies and scardy-cats" is what I'm looking for.

Thanks!

Well, here is what I would do:

  • find a simple framed mirror in the dimensions you like your cabinet to be
  • build a box the size of that mirror an what ever depth you like (the mirror should easily fit into the box as you want to make an inset door)
  • build a barnwood frame that fits on top of your box
  • sand and finish as you like

I hope that made sense! Feel free to ask any question!

Even easier:

Buy an inexpensive recessed medicine cabinet with a mirror door. If you want a wooden frame on the mirror, either buy a wooden framed one, or make a frame and glue it on the glass.

After you cut the hole to install it, make a wide frame around the hole, using Ana's "Barnwood" picture frame plans - either plain like the "Palmer", or with some added strips like the Holbrook and the others, or maybe with more elaborate molding.

Paint the frame.

Install the cabinet in the frame.

Touch up any dings.

No box-making, no mirror mounting, just working with flat frames and molding strips.
