Question for a newbee

What was your first project...do you have any recommendations on what is a easy project? I have found so many great ideas on here I don't know where to start. I want to succeed to with the first project to prove to my hubby that I can be good at this. Also with regards to price that is listed on the project would you say that is fairly accurate? Thanks, Heather

The $10 shelves are a good first project. Simple, they look nice, and a shelf is always useful.

As to the prices, they're accurate for the original builder. Wood is a commodity and subject to pretty wild market fluctuations. Wood prices are going to be higher right now, especially in the south, because severe storms have put some market pressure on the supply.

This book is also pretty good: http://www.amazon.com/Woodworking-Your-Kids-Over-Projects/dp/0942391616…

It was written in the 1970s by a fellow who had the good fortune to work for a school that valued ingenuity and practicality. He build a woodworking program on a shoestring, and he had 8th graders building pretty sophisticated furniture. The book talks about laying hands on basic tools without busting the bank, how to use them for common tasks, and where to source wood cheaply.
