While sanding a long board on my tabletop, a small crack turned out to be a large splinter. I thought I could just sand it away, but I only made the situation worse. The large splinter eventually got broke off.
I now have a deep channel (about 1/4" deep) that runs for about 6".
I am staining this project and looking for advice on how to fix this.
I've tried filling the gouge with wood filler, sanding, then staining it, but the end result looks gritty and stands out.
My final option is to replace the board.
Anything else I could do? What about wood putty?

New board
Is your best bet. The board doesn't need to be thrown out. Set it aside in your scrap pile, because at some point you're bound to have a use for a scrap piece, or at least for shorter pieces taken from around the gouge.
