Preparing for Siding

You do not know how bad I wish I could say that today we start siding. After getting the doors trimmed out, time to start siding, right? Uh, wrong. This huge pile of siding is going to stay a huge pile of siding for a while longer. We still have to trim out each and ever single door and window with metal C Channel and flashing that does 2 things: 1. Hide ends of siding 2. Protect the Momplex from water drainage And what a long, tedious job this turned out to be!

Starting Flooring ...

The weather has still been too darn hot for us Alaskans to work on a deck in the heat (yes, for us, heat is anything above 80 degrees - pathetic, I know), so our decking project is going to wait for another day. Inside the Momplex, it's nice a cool. When we choose to build with ARXX blocks (Insulated Concrete Forms that are basically hollow legos that you stack and fill with concrete) the main reason was energy efficiency and preventing heat loss. Ironic how we are enjoying how cool the M

Stepping Up

Once upon a time, we bought some 2x12 boards.

And we dug a giant hole, and laid those 2x12 boards in the ground.

Those boards made up the forms for the foundation of the Momplex.

And we poured concrete inside those boards.

And let it set up.

Those same 2x12 boards were removed from the footer forms after the concrete dried.

We used a few of them to help

Subway Tile Backsplash Install

For me, the sawdust is where it is AT.

Wood is my medium of choice.  I love how easy to cut wood is, how naturally beautiful it is.  I love how it smells when you work with it, I love how functional it becomes when you use it.  I love that wood is renewable, and while it renews, it renews our air.  I love working with wood.

But while taking on a Momplex, we've had to work with alot of other mediums.  Styrofoam blocks, poured concrete, and drywall. &

UPDATE: Congrats to megcaton for winning this giveaway! This giveaway is now closed, thank you to everyone who entered! A very Happy Friday to you!

I'm so delighted today to share with you one of my favorite sawdust-free projects with you that we've done on the Momplex.  Of course, I'm partial to all things made of wood - but really, the same basic skills that help you make wood projects nice, translate to other mediums - like tile!

We've been working hard a

The First Wall Pour

Everything is going smooth.  Very smooth.  Too smooth really. And then we hear an odd sound. Not a loud one. More like a stretching sound. Like the kids are playing tug-o-war and suddenly they both yell, "I win!" at the same time.Like a sound you aren't supposed to hear. But you heard it. And you know something is very wrong.I run around the outside of the Momplex, and I see, the ICF blocks have just barely started to separate on the side, and concrete is just start

Upstairs Exterior Walls

After getting our two weeks notice in the form of a white slip of snow on Donnelly Dome, we decided to take some extra steps in preparation for a very unwanted visitor who will be staying a long time. Think of him like bad in-laws from the movies ... you know you have to get along, but you really don't want to (not you Mom-who-likes-to-sew). Yep, Mr. Jack Frost is on his way.  And he's packed and prepared to stay until April or May.

HRV

What to do after you've spent a year and a half building a super insulated building, so air tight it's poured in concrete?

Drill big fat holes in it of course!

We've entered my most dreaded phase of building.

It's utility time.

I despise this stage because there is so much work, so much money invested ... but you can't see it.  In other words, you aren't getting a finished project.  You are getting what looks like a freeway interchange of pipes to be hidden i

Finishing the Vinyl Plank Flooring

If there's one thing I've learned about DIY over all the years and houses and furniture I've built, it's this: Don't give up until you get it right. So after a long, frusturating day of installing flooring, we got a good night's rest, and headed back up to the hill.

Staining Interior Doors

NOTE: For our Facebook Fans, we are working hard to get our Facebook page back.  It was hacked and stolen last week.  I will update you when I have confirmed information on it's status.  Thank you for your patience.

We've been trying to work hard up at the Momplex, finishing up the other side.  It's been a struggle with a new baby. Baby usually wins, resulting in not much getting done on the second Momplex unit.

There is a lot of baby talk getting

What's Next?
