"Work Box" Craft Cabinet

I currently have a craft room, but we may be down sizing soon and I came across this "Work Box."  With a $1,200+ price tag, I knew it could be built for much much less.  Here's the YouTube link to this product: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....ggby_k3lU8

Ana, I would love for you to cover this project.  I'm sure a lot of us crafters would too actually.

Remember the entry way phone charger cubbies, and the storage cubbies and "Gracies closet" door modifications?  This is a mash-up of those.

****************

Looking at the video - several times, hitting the stop button a lot :)

The front "doors" are tall boxes on casters, hinged to the sides so they can fold all the way flush with the back part. I will call these the "front boxes".

Stop the video at 8 seconds ... you can see the toekick area and that two inner doors are hinged to the front boxes,

At 10 seconds, you see that the inner doors to the front boxes are very shallow, used to hold really flat stuff.

A couple seconds further ... you see that the rear box is twice the width of the front boxes, and has some sort of a drop-leaf table worj surface.

At 15 seconds, you see the dropleaf and the large cubbies behind it.

*******************
I see five boxes (three if you eliminated those inner doors), a bunch of cubbyholes, and a drop-leaf flat surface.

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/cata.....s/30062572 shows one way to make it. Or make the cubbies or shelves a bit shallower than the box so you have room to store your favorite folding table in there.

I would cheat and make the whole thing - outer boxes, cubbies and/or shelves to fit plastic drawer stacks from Walmart or the dollar store - way less work.

I would make one cubby at the top of the worksurface big enough to hold my sewing machine and run the cord to a power strip at the back of that cubby, where my work lights (mounted at the top of the rear box) would also plug in.

I would line one of the inner doors with a corkboard to pin the pattern instructions on and the other with ready-made thread and bobbin holder pegs, and a pegboard to hold scissors and other tools. And a magnet to hold pins.

See Tsu- you always know how to break it down!

Im having a hard time visualizing it, but I agree about the drawers.  I was thinking

those would have to be modified, I was thinking of those 12 x 12 art bins and just

using quarter round strips to act as runners so the bins could be slid in and out.

thanks for your imput Ill have to work at "seeing" what you're describing.

Peace

It seems fairly straight forward. the only thing I am wondering is about the side hinges. do they slide? They are attached to the main front box but then there is another mini box that opens that looks about 2 inches deep. wouldnt that make it not sit flush once closed. I'm not even sure if I am describing this correctly.
