Garden Shed

Submitted by Deborah on Sat, 08/18/2012 - 23:01

I have been dreaming about building so many things featured on this website, and I finally buckled down and built something. I figured that an outside garden shed would be a bit more forgiving than a project requiring a bit more precision, and from the picture, you can see that it's not perfect! I'm still working on trimming the shingles and I still have to stain/seal it. I've got to admit, when I first picked up the wood for the project at the store, I wondered what I had gotten myself into. But I just jumped in, and here it is.

Estimated Cost
$300

Papa’s Treehouse

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 06/25/2020 - 02:53

Have 3 granddaughters; 3, 2 and 6 months, so far 😉 Saw your treehouse video and made a modified version of your triangle platform using the trees I had available. Kinda went over the top a bit, but give you all the credit. Repurposed mostly old deck PT wood and rough hewn beams from neighbors.
Thanks!

Balin Console Table with a twist

Submitted by CustomPulp on Wed, 10/19/2016 - 11:39

We needed an entry way table with storage.   The Balin Console Table was the perfect size for our needs.   I modified the drawers by attaching a wood frame around each one.  I decided to taper the legs with my mitre saw.   The hardware was purchased at Pottery Barn ($4/each) and the color is Valspar Turquoise / Gray - Semi Gloss.   I extended the leg length 6" to make the cabinet counter top heigth (plans call for a table heigth).

Project was easy (8 hours) from construction to finish.

One advantage I had was using a sliding power mitre saw with a 12 1/4" cross cut for the 1x12 material.   It's possible to get a decent cut with a circular saw but the sliding compound mitre saw definitely makes that portion of the project go much quicker.

For best results, I recommend finish sanding with 220 grit and 2 coats of paint rubbing with steel wool after first paint application.

$80

Day Project (6-9 Hours)
Finish Used
Valspar semi gloss - 2 coats

Modified Farmhouse X Desk

I modified the Farmhouse X Desk plan from Handmade Haven to add the shelving on both ends. I also have a Z on the end instead of the X as that was the way my husband preferred it (it is for him after all). The top is live edge wood which is tricky to work with since the thickness is different from board to board but I still like the way it turned out! The live edge top did add time to the build as well as staining and varnishing as opposed to painting the base.

Built from Plan(s)
Estimated Time Investment
Week Long Project (20 Hours or More)
Finish Used
Minwax Jacobean stain mixed with Special Walnut (had a little of both on hand) for the base and left the top natural. Both coated with Minwax oil modified water based polyurethane.

Is there anyway you can share these plans with me!? I drew out some plans for an identical table but I think my cuts may be off! It would be so helpful.

Rustic Farmhouse Dining Room Table w/ Benches

Made a vintage/rustic farmhouse dining room table with matching benches. Fairly easy DIY job. The notches were the most difficult. Quite heavy, so I suggest using less 2x2 for under-table supports. Turned out beautifully and very happy with it.

Kitchen Island with pallet wood

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Sat, 01/23/2021 - 19:35

After following Ana Whit and other bloggers for a long time i figured my skills were at a level to try an advanced build like the Kitchen Island.. But i also wanted to challenge myself even more and was determined to make it from as much reclaimed wood as i could, mainly pallet wood.
With a lot of modifications to make it work i think I got a good result from these plans.

While i used as much reclaimed wood as i could, i still needed some clean 2x4's , 2x2's

Estimated Cost
$50

Week Long Project (20 Hours or More)
Finish Used
I burned the top and used a cup wire brush on an angle grinder to get the effect of barn wood. then a couple coats of lacquer on the top. And a spray finish of polyacrylic for everything else.

Pool equipment fence refresh

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 07/06/2017 - 21:00

We love this fence refresh from the previous owner's solution to enclosing the pool equipment and a/c unit! It was the first time we fastened something to our house - drilling through stucco in the process. That was a big deal for us diy-ers! We made the frame out of 4x4's (which ended up being the most challenging part to the whole thing), applied the horizontal fencing boards and then used one of those $15 fence hardware kits - it was a great project that has made a huge difference in our backyard. Yay!

Day bed

Submitted by Christinna on Thu, 09/07/2017 - 17:05

My sister needed a day bed for her guest room.  I modified the Modern Outdoor Chair plans to fit her needs.  We used an old door she found, even using the hinges as a means to attach the door to the bed frame.  This was my first real project.

Resized modern chairs with table

Submitted by CarolinaL on Thu, 12/28/2017 - 16:27

I needed chairs that would fit on my narrow front porch. This plan was great because I was able to resize it to 20x20. I used 1x4s that I already had and some wood glue. They turned out solid. I made the tryde table with left over wood. That one is 17.5x17.5. Super happy with the results. We are doing the garage shelves right now. I have a list of other things I want to make thanks to Ana's wonderful website.

Garden/Storage Shed

Submitted by Smokeydog on Mon, 08/03/2015 - 06:48

Building a storage shed was quite a jump for me but because of the confidence and experience I gained from Ana's  site I decided to give it a shot.  I acquired the plans online. It has 8 foot high walls and 3 feet of "attic space".  The shed is 8'x12'.  I used cement board lap siding.  It took about seven weeks to finish working a few hours here and there.  I really like it.  Even has a little window flower box.

Mini vanity for a mini bathroom

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Sat, 04/23/2022 - 04:54

We are setting up a small bathroom In our dry cabin. We will have a water container on the sink top and a bucket collecting grey water below. None of the commercial vanities had the right combination of price/sturdiness/shelf configuration/style I was looking for, so I made my own!

Modifications:
-no top
-lower shelf
-used 1x2 (not 2x2) on front shelf support to maximize shelf space
-wider and deeper than plans to fit sink top just right! It took a lot of math and trial and error on plank width combinations.
-added a door, which turned out to be the hardest part for me
