Doll Daybed with trundle

Submitted by DTeague on Fri, 11/30/2012 - 12:46

Created this bed for my niece for Christmas. My son was so excited to put pieces of fabric for the sheets on it so I was able to take a great picture. I didn't make plans since I was winging it as I went, however I did kind of follow the simple day bed plans and doll bed trundle tips.

Child's Bench with Arbor

Submitted by jennibee on Sun, 09/14/2014 - 08:57

This was a weekend build made from plans right here on Ana-White's site. There were a few changes made to make it sturdier since several (older) rambunctious toddlers were going to be using it. If anyone is interested in how much weight it can hold, two adults sat on this and it held up great. We have had this in the back yard for over a year now and it looks just as it did when it was first built.

Estimated Cost
Under $100. Not sure about actual cost since we had wood, primer, and paint on hand.

All by myself!

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Mon, 01/02/2017 - 19:26

This project took a few days longer than anticipated.  I was having an issue with my screws and stripping the heads.  After EIGHT trips to Lowes I found out that I needed a drill with torque and mine didn't.  Total costs: pipes & screws= $150.00.  Wood and stain = $170.00.  2017 pricing!  Amazing closet!  And for the record...I am a complete novice!

Play Table Stool

Submitted by clareg on Sun, 09/13/2020 - 18:15

Used the plans of the play stool, then used the kreg jig to attach three 2x6 boards to make a thicker stool top. Jig sawed around the edges after tracing a design and used a Dremel to create the animal design border Turned out super cute and goddaughter loved it!

upside down V bookshelf

This project took several months of off and on work but I am very happy with the results. Followed the plans on this website and they were great. The only change I made was to add x cross braces for added support. They were necessary because this thing is wobbly as it is. Got the wood from the local lowes and the hardware from Ace Hardware. Used the Kreg Jig pocket hole system to hide the fasteners which makes a big difference.

I made some other furniture from plans on this website so I used the same rustic stain on this piece. The stain was great, really easy to make and stains really well. I covered the stain with the recommended wax which gives it a really nice shine and is very smooth.

Huge thanks to this website!

We found these plans and figured we would try it out! Worked great. We bought the Jig and the wood and took our time building it. We really love how it turned out. We made sure to take our time with sanding and filling holes. Our 6 year-old daughter chose the color.

Garage Shelves - Freestanding (Modified)

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Tue, 09/15/2020 - 20:45

First project ever! I have been planning to build this for at least a year, and I finally did it! I had to modify the plan to fit my space, but it worked out well. They cut the wood for me at the store, so I did not make any cuts myself, just assembled all of the pieces together. I used all 2x4s, 8' and 10', cut down to my measurements. I did not finish the shelves since it is just for the garage, but I did sand rough board edges and some of the faces. I just used an palm sander and coarse sandpaper (80 grit). Please double check all measurements and lists because I forgot to add my shorter shelf supports to the list and had to go back to the store. I also forgot to add the width of the top shelf to those two shorter supports, so the shelf boards are resting on the top instead of nestled into the supports. It turned out not to be a functional problem, but a good lesson to learn. I also learned to make sure my driver battery is charged fully before starting - that took a large chunk out of my first day building and I had to finish the next day. My husband helped with some lifting and holding, but I mostly did this on my own in one weekend, so you CAN do it! Don't wait like I did - it is soooooooo useful and it looks great! All of my friends are really impressed and it feels so good to have made something like this! Thank you Ana!!

Bookcase Storage Unit Desk Combo

My home seems to shrink in direct proportion to my daughter's growth. It seems we never have quite enough space for the new cache of toys, books, games, etc. So, I decided to look for a bookcase/storage center/desk that she could grow with and that might keep up with her. When I shopped for such a large item, the price tag was even larger. I decided to build one myself. I posted step-by-step directions with pictures on my blog: www.momthebuilder.net. Check it out and tell me what you think!

Square coffee table

Submitted by shanef1 on Sun, 09/21/2014 - 20:58

This is my first "finished" project.  It is made of 3/4 inch maple, which I purchased from a big box store.  I cut the top boards to 38 1/2 inches long and used seven boards (1x6's) for the top.  Using the kreg pocket hole tool, some glue and 2 clamps - I was able to easily join the top.  This process took several days because I only had 2 clamps and took my time joining 2 boards at one time.  The outer edge of the table is mitred 1x2's so the top looks like it is 2 inches thick, but it is only 3/4 of an inch.

The legs are made of four of the 1x4's glued together and cut to 18 inches in length.  The base (apron) is made of 1x4's cut to 30 1/2 inches long and attached to the legs using pocket holes / screws and glue - leaving a reveal edge.  I also added two 1x2's in the middle of the base for added strength for the top.  The top was pocket hole / screwed to the base.

The finish is Generals gel stain in Java colour - two coats.  Then I added three coats of gel polyurethane.

Benchright Farmhouse Dining Table

This was our first project from Ana-white. Make sure you notice that the dimensions on the cut list & drawings are different! We went by the cut list. We made a slight change to the frame on the end supports: instead of a 2x2, we used a 2x8. We felt more secure about people/kids pushing down on the edge of the table since we were able to both notch and put two screws into that end piece.

We used Aspen for the top, which I would not suggest. It ended up soaking up the stain very unevenly and blotching, even after using pre-stain.

For hardware, we used a 5 foot black iron pipe from Lowe's. Once we had the table assembled and the holes drilled, we remeasured and had Lowe's trim it by a few inches and re-thread (for free). We also used four square washers from McMaster-Carr (part no. 91128a140) which were $11after shipping.

We made our own wood putty out of sawdust, craft glue, and a little bit of the stain that we used for the table. It worked like a charm.

The two of us spent maybe 5 hours for assembly and another 6 for finishing.

Estimated Cost
200
Estimated Time Investment
Weekend Project (10-20 Hours)
Finish Used
We used Minwax 'Early American' and Semi-gloss polyurethane. We rag-applied 3 coats of stain, used a foam brush for 1 coat of poly, and followed up with 2 coats of brush-applied poly. We suggest the brush application for poly. We used steel wool very lightly after each coat.

Pallet shelves

Submitted by lbadger on Thu, 12/20/2012 - 19:03

The first time I saw Ana's pallet shelves I knew I had to build them! It took a while but I found the perfect application. A place to hang the kids bibs and our snow pants that are a bit too long for the coat rack, and the bonus shelf for wet hats/mittens or chicken gloves that you don't exactly want in with your clean stuff ;>
