Modified 2x4 Outdoor Sofa, Sectional, and Coffee Table

Submitted by SofiaTaz on Mon, 08/30/2021 - 12:40

My daughter and I built this out of the old framing that was pulled out of the house (fir) and some leftover wood from a friend's house build a few years back. If the cushions are lifted up you will see the old electrical wire holes! I shortened the set by one seat so it would fit the patio space. The cushions are from Ikea and fit perfectly. I also modified the coffee table so it was the similar proportion to the full sized set. Thanks for the very approachable plans Ana! Excuse the water all over the area in the pics. We have water dogs and they seem to like the sectional too!

Did you use a metal bed frame or did you make the side rails and frame? i am curious how high my mattress will sit above the footboard because I want to make the side rails and use slats. I have a boxspring that I will be using. I dont want my mattress to tower over my footboard. did you adjust the length of the 4x4s on your footboard?

Farmhouse Queen

I loved this bed and started building it last summer.  Most of my lumber was inexpensive (meaning somewhat warped with dings, knots, cracking, etc).  Since I wanted a very clean and smooth look, I took a lot of time filling, sanding, filling, sanding, over and over in order to get it just right.  I also like the paneling look on other beds I have seen, so I added 1x over each of the panel board seams.

For the frame, I built using 2x4 and then ran MDF strips across.  With all of this wood, it is a very heavy and very sturdy (if we ever move, my wife says we are leaving it at the house).

Easy free Changing Station

I made a few changes but not much!  I used biscuit jointers and dowels, so only nails for glue to dry.  Lock miter draw joints.  But all the wood came from scraps from the saw mill I work at :).

Triangular Rabbit Hutch

Submitted by Medeek on Fri, 05/03/2013 - 18:14

This is a rabbit hutch I created for my kids 5 rabbits. The thing that makes this hutch really nice is if you have a large lawn you can just move the hutch a little bit every day and the lawn gets mowed, fertilized and you don't have to worry about cleaning up all the rabbit droppings. I also mounted a rabbit feeder on the inside of the house door to keep the food dry, which has worked really well.

Here is a short blog of all the steps in its construction:

I apologize I haven't got the completed planset up for this project yet but I will try to get it up in the next couple of weeks as well as a very complete materials list. You will need to go to a farm/feed store to get the correct 1"x2" wire and 1/2"x1" wire for the floor. Do not go to Home Depot and use the cow wire they have or the hardware cloth for the floor, neither of which are the correct choice. Home Depot has the lumber but not the wire. If you have any questions or even improvements to my design I would be interested in hearing from you.

Finally got around to uploading the plans.  I still need to create a material list for this plan but the basics are there now.   We've had rabbits in it for about a year but recently we've tried some guinea pigs and it works great for that as well.  The guinea pigs can pretty much live off just the grass and dandelions but you do need to move it daily to give them plenty to eat.

Simple coat rack

Submitted by Medickep on Mon, 05/06/2013 - 08:23

This was a simple coat rack I decided to make with some random scraps of wood I had from previous projects. The only out of pocket costs for me was the hooks!

***update****

I decided to make a kid friendly version as my kids were creating quit the pile of courts and backpacks when they got home from school, mostly because they couldn't reach the adult one! With some left overs, problem solved!!

Estimated Cost
10-30 (depends on hooks you choose and scraps of wood you have!)

Exactly what I was looking to make without getting a router involved! What kind of moulding is that?

It's exterior header for a window you see on some homes. Common at a lot of lumber stores. The best part is that it's solid, so no need for complex crown-molding cuts

Farmhouse Table

Submitted by jennazer on Wed, 05/08/2013 - 15:22

I am completely redecorating my home, Out is the furniture that no one was allowed to sit on or go near. I wanted furniture that we could use. I have 2 boys so I wanted it casual, fun and durable. Loved the farmhouse style and loved this table. It is made from pine, sanded and stained on top. I used Minwax provincial stain. Bottom is painted with black furniture paint then distressed. We purchased the legs from Osborne Wood Products.

Simple Red Garden Bench

Submitted by EAnderson on Sun, 03/29/2015 - 19:20

This was the first building project I completed by myself start to finish! I was able to use 2x4s we already had in the garage (sorry husband!) and some scrap wood for the few other pieces it required. The only thing I added to the plans was some trim for the front.

I built this last summer and since then the shelf on the very top has warped a bit. I would recommend adding extra support. It rains a lot here, and I think that contributed to it warping. Other than that, it has held up very well and the shelf can easily be fixed with some brackets.

Overall, this was a great first build for me! The plans were straightforward and easy to follow. And there's just nothing more rewarding than standing back at the end of a day of building and thinking, Hey I made that :)
