hidden powder station dresser

We did some small edit to the original plan. Putting six large drawers and only one chair which was moved to the center. We also extended the chair legs the full length of the cabinet. The outer legs are 2x2s instead of 2 1x2s since no chairs were placed there.

My Wife's New Desk

Submitted by swt101 on Wed, 09/28/2016 - 07:12

My wife recently started Grad School and needed a better space to study other than the dining room table. She found the plans that she liked on Shanty2Chic and bought the addtional tools needed for the job...she was serious about this project. I made the desk over 3 weekends, a few hours each day.  I only diverted from the plans by adding a 1 1/2" spade bit hole in the back to run the power cords through and tacking a surdge protector in between the top beams to help organize and hide the cords.

Built from Plan(s)
Estimated Cost
The wood was @ $75, but I needed a few more tools for the project.
Estimated Time Investment
Weekend Project (10-20 Hours)
Finish Used
We used a Minwax Dark Walnut stain and Minwax Polycrylic Satin finish

Workbench Console Bar

Submitted by JenMash on Mon, 09/03/2012 - 13:18

So this is the third piece that we decided to make off of Ana's site (all in a 2 week span!) The bar was definitely not hard and looks awesome (much better in person - my camera is not stellar).

I would definitely suggest investing in nice hardware. We special ordered the towel bar from Lowes. We also had a bulldog bottle opener that we attached to the side. It adds something really fun to it!

Stain all pieces separately and make sure that all sawdust is off from the sanding (using a vacuum and a tack cloth).

The piece that the towel bar is on we ended up taking off to put the towel bar on and then reattached it...just something to keep in mind.

We love this bar so much and it is a great addition to our home.

**The top does get REALLY heavy so be mindful of that.

Built from Plan(s)
Estimated Cost
100.00
Estimated Time Investment
Day Project (6-9 Hours)
Finish Used
We used Minwax pre-stain, Dark Walnut stain which really soaks into the wood. To get in the little cracks between the wood pieces, we used a q-tip. We distressed using a creme brulee torch, chain, hammer and drill bit.

beautiful top! Did you square up the boards or did they come that way? Very nice work and wonderful finish.
About how much did the walnut cost? Was it hard to saw through and drill?

We have a very friendly local hard wood store (hugh's hardwoods) who squared the boards for us. Bought a LOT of walnut for ~$800 but had enough left over for a large dog crate (posting pics of that soon). It wasn't hard to saw or drill but was a bear to sand.

Dining room table

Submitted by Medickep on Mon, 10/03/2016 - 13:38

I made two of these tables and they were pretty fun, but were a little more work than I thought they would be.  All of the wood is kiln dried douglas fir, as the first table top I made warped as it was green wood and not the look I was going for.  I shortened the length to 72" so I had to adjust the angles for the center pieces.  I decided to build the tables, stain it, them took them apart and glued important joints, prior to staining the tables a second coat to avoid the glue standing out.  I also used 4x4's instead of sandwiched 2x4's as I thought it looked nicer that way.  I finished with 9 coats of polyurethane on the top and than a coat of wax using 0000 steel wool to get all the little imperfections out.

Built from Plan(s)
Estimated Cost
75.00 for just the wood (one table)

Plus Poly, sandpaper and screws.
Estimated Time Investment
Weekend Project (10-20 Hours)
Finish Used
Dark walnut (lighter one)

Ebony (darker one)

Poly and wax on top.

This is our first woodworking project! My husband and I decided to build a bookshelf because my old store bought flimsy bookshelves didn't make it into our new home. They completely fell apart. Needless to say, with 16 boxes of books sitting in our bedroom, we were well motivated to build this bookcase!

PB Teen-Inspired Ladder Shelf

Submitted by katie0910 on Thu, 07/03/2014 - 09:03

I saw this Ladder Shelf in the PB Teen catalog months ago and knew it would be an easy knockoff project. It took maybe 20 minutes to build the ladder, and then I painted it using a paint sprayer. All-in-all, it only took a few hours to build (minus the glue dry time). And I was able to build it for 1/3 the price of the original! Check out my blog for the instructions on how I built it. http://addicted2diy.com/2014/07/01/pb-teen-inspired-ladder-shelf/

This is what got me started! PIANO BAR

This is what got me started in woodworking.  I started by repurposing different things. This is a piano that I repurposed into a bar.  I have repurposed many items. Then I got the urge to build new items.  I can't stop!!!  I am totally addicted!  I have built the sandboxes with the lids that fold into seats, (I adapted the plans to make a 5' by 5'), toys boxes,  childs tables and chairs, lego tables, and the list goes on.  I cannot stay out of my garage.  But I am loving it.

12 year old built her bed!

Submitted by gmktt on Wed, 07/08/2020 - 20:01

Thanks Ana White for the awesome plans! My daughter decided she wanted a new bed, so I told her I’d help her build one. I am not a carpenter, by any stretch, but I thought it would be some good dad/daughter bonding time. She tweaked your plans, did all the cuts, drilling, sanding, and painting (well, most of the sanding and painting anyway), and tolerated her father with great grace. It turned out pretty well. We couldn’t have done it without your plans! Thanks again! —Gabe

I've been wanting to make a bench out of a headboard and possibly the footboard, too. Looks great!
