hanging daybed

Submitted by cableslack on Sun, 03/15/2015 - 08:58

I really liked and wanted to build the hanging daybed.  Then I needed somewhere to hang it.  Then I wanted to use it during the day (Northeast Brasil - Sun is brutal)

Built using massaranduba wood (Father in law has a woodshop) and the thing weighs a tonne.

The shades are a 85% sunshade.

It has proven very popular with family and friends.  As of yet there has not been space on it for me to try out.

Bed measures 1.0M x 1.9M

Project all total took about 120 hours.

Built from Plan(s)
Estimated Cost
$1250

Week Long Project (20 Hours or More)
Finish Used
varnish with solar filter. About 5 coats

Modern Adirondack Chair

Submitted by MartyH on Sun, 08/15/2021 - 15:56

Great Plans. I extended the back with an extra 1x10 and it works great being that I'm 6' 4". Also used a router to round the arms, front seat board, and the top back board. Just need to stain and waterproof for the patio. I'm new to woodworking (besides home trim work). Your plans are great as is or for just getting started. I'm trying this out as a hobby for retirement (sometime in the next 5 years). Buying the equipment now as needed. Thanks so much for the plans and videos.

Estimated Cost
$60-$70

Afternoon Project (3-6 Hours)
Finish Used
Going to use Behr semi-transparent stain and Waterproof (Cedar color)

Kentwood Bookshelf

Submitted by cchandler on Fri, 04/26/2013 - 07:55

This was my first crack at a project. I changed the plans a bit to make it wider and taller by one more shelf. I wanted an "espresso" finish to match my other furniture and after testing a bunch of different stains I settled on the General Finishes Gel Stain in Java. It was so much easier to work with than the others I tried, requiring only two coats, and the color turned out almost perfectly matching my C&B coffee table. I used the General Finishes Arm-R-Seal semi-gloss topcoat (two coats). Thanks for the plans!

Beautiful build. I found out about GF from others on this site. I finally tried it and I absolutely love it, too! No comparison!

Rolling Book Bin

Submitted by getcz on Sun, 08/29/2021 - 06:58

This crate was designed as a shower gift for a grandma-to-be. It was made with solid plywood sides instead of slats but otherwise follows the plans. The top edges were banded to conceal the plywood. The stain used was Minwax oil-based semi-transparent in Classic Gray. The decals were cut on a Silhouette Cameo 4 and adhered to each long side after one coat of poly followed by two additional coats.

Easter Bunny Wood Decor Piece

Submitted by Nor7 on Thu, 03/19/2015 - 07:25

This was a simple build. You can probably tell from the pictures how it was cut, painted and decorated. The whiskers are just picture hanging wire. The wood was scrap from around my shop and all the other materials we had on hand.

Estimated Cost
$0. Made from scrap and hobby materials from around the house/garage.

Redwood Planters

Submitted by powerof2 on Thu, 09/09/2021 - 21:39

Planters from Easy Build DIY Planter Box. Some modifications, but essentially direct from the plans. I used redwood fence pickets for the slats, finished the frame with an "ancient oak" stain and the faces with spar varnish diluted with paint thinner.

Bray and Harper's Playhouse

This playhouse was built by my 4 year old son and I. We used the general plans and even added the drop down desk. Most of it was built using my miter saw stand, another great idea by Ana White!

Simple Potting Bench

Submitted by girlcat36 on Tue, 09/21/2021 - 15:07

Potting sink loosely based on the Simple 2x4 Potting Bench plan, using scraps I had on hand and an old kitchen sink. One of the uprights is warped, so I used a lattice back and curved outer brackets to detract from that. I was trying to keep this zero cost.

Hailey platform bed and headboard

Submitted by Coldhanson on Thu, 05/02/2013 - 23:10

I've bookmarked this plan a long time ago just waiting for the time and energy to make it! I recruited my dad to help and he put it together for me over the weekend.
I used one coat of minwax dark walnut for stain and one coat of semi gloss polyurethane for protection.

My son loves it, and it looks great in his new room!

Workbench Console

I followed the plans except I decided to do a chevron top instead of the 3 long boards. I used two coats of gunstock stain on the major partrs and 2 coats of semi-gloss clear on everything. Also I did not put caster wheels on (client did not need this thing rolling).

I'm in LOVE!

This was my very first project... I went with antiquing the table, thanks to my Golden Retriever. (Even though he's a hundred times better than his puppy stages, if he chews, it won't show easily.)

The wood sizes are slightly off, but hey - this is what you do with free wood! Still worked perfectly!

Headboard from a door

Submitted by Medickep on Mon, 05/06/2013 - 07:27

I made this Headboard from am old 5 panel solid core Douglas fir door I found at a building construction recycling place. I originally wanted to stain it, but the door, which was previously stained with a polyurethane proved to be very difficult. I wanted to avoid dealing with a hollow core door after trimming both sides to make it symmetrical.

I purchased some French cleats to hang this, but you could make some out of wood to cut more costs!

Very cheap to make!

Estimated Cost
160-180 (depends on the door you select)
Estimated Time Investment
Afternoon Project (3-6 Hours)
Finish Used
I used a high quality primer first and good paint that had self-leveling qualities to it. I was applying with a brush and wanted to avoid brush strokes. A paint sprayer would have been better!

Bookshelf with bench for kid's room

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Tue, 06/27/2017 - 15:12

I was looking for something for my son's room that would last him until college, so I adapted your plans and added hooks and a bench and stained it.  Bookends are all we are missing to make it perfect. He loves it, and I don't think he will be able to break it.  I could use a suggestion for anchoring it to the wall, though. Thank you for the great, easy-to-follow plan!

Your bookshelf and bench look really nice and sturdy!  I'm sure it will hold up for many years.  As far as anchoring it to a wall, I have had luck with anti-tip furniture straps.  I would use several and anchor them right to the studs.  I also use long, self tapping construction screws instead of the screws that come in the package.
